The treatment

What is
Radiofrequency?

Radiofrequency heats the deep layers of the skin using electromagnetic waves, with no needles at all and without touching the surface.

The mechanism rests on how collagen behaves when heated. Brought to around forty degrees, it contracts immediately, producing a tightening effect visible during the session itself. That heat also triggers an underlying reaction: the skin cells start making new collagen over the following weeks. You therefore get an immediate, discreet effect and then a more lasting, gradual result.

During the session the device is moved slowly over the skin and you feel a pleasant warmth, close to a hot massage. It is the most comfortable treatment in our range: no needles, no pain, no redness when you leave.

At the Petit-Lancy clinic, it is used on the jawline, neck and eye area, and also on the stomach, arms and inner thighs.

We should be clear about what it genuinely delivers. Radiofrequency improves the firmness and texture of skin that is beginning to slacken. It does not replace a facelift, does not make you slimmer and has no effect on significant laxity. Its results are real but moderate, and they need maintaining.

The protocol comprises six to eight weekly sessions, then monthly or seasonal maintenance.

It is often the treatment offered to patients who want to start without injections, or who cannot afford even a few hours of social downtime. Nothing about it is visible, before or after, which makes it easy to fit into a working week, whatever your job involves.

  • Tightening effect noticeable from the first session
  • Gradual result that builds over the following weeks
  • The most affordable treatment in our range, at CHF 150.- per session
  • Can be used on the face as well as the body

How it works

The treatment
process.

01
Before

Prior consultation

Any radiofrequency treatment begins with a thorough medical examination to rule out any absolute contraindications. It is essential to inform your doctor if you have a pacemaker, defibrillator, metal or electronic implants, or a copper IUD (in the case of abdominal treatment). Pregnancy, active cancer, or skin sensitivity disorders also require the treatment to be postponed. Before the session begins, the patient removes all jewelry and metal objects to ensure optimal safety.

02
During

Application of the treatment

After preparing the treatment area, a neutral conductive gel is applied to the skin to facilitate the uniform distribution of electromagnetic waves. The physician or qualified specialist gradually moves the handpiece using steady, circular motions. Skin temperature is continuously monitored with an infrared thermometer to achieve the targeted deep-tissue thermal effect without damaging the epidermis. The patient experiences a gentle, painless sensation of warmth, indicating collagen stimulation.

03
After

Post-procedure course and recovery recommendations

The procedure requires no social downtime; makeup can be applied and daily activities resumed immediately. Mild redness or a temporary sensation of warmth may persist for about an hour. To optimize results and facilitate the elimination of tissue byproducts, it is recommended to maintain high fluid intake in the hours following treatment. High-SPF sun protection is advised for exposed areas to preserve skin health.

Frequently asked questions

What you'd like
to know before your session.

Can medical radiofrequency replace a surgical facelift?+
No, radiofrequency does not replace a surgical facelift. It is a non-invasive treatment designed to address mild to moderate skin laxity by stimulating collagen synthesis. In cases of significant tissue sagging or excess skin, only cosmetic surgery offers structural correction. An initial diagnostic consultation allows the specialist to assess skin quality and determine the most appropriate treatment.
Is radiofrequency treatment painful?+
The treatment session is exceptionally comfortable and painless. The sensation is similar to a very tolerable warm massage. The temperature of the dermis is continuously monitored to ensure patient safety; if the heat becomes too intense, the device settings are immediately adjusted.
When do the first results regarding skin firmness appear?+
Although a temporary tightening effect may appear immediately after the procedure due to thermal contraction, long-lasting results develop gradually over several weeks. As neocollagenesis peaks two to three months after the end of the treatment protocol, this is the stage when the skin's redensification is fully apparent.
How many radiofrequency sessions are needed for optimal results?+
An initial treatment protocol typically consists of 6 to 8 weekly sessions. To maintain tissue firmness and sustain fibroblast stimulation, monthly or seasonal maintenance sessions are recommended. Without maintenance, the stimulation naturally fades over a period of 6 to 12 months.
Does radiofrequency reduce body fat or lead to weight loss?+
No, radiofrequency targets skin quality, density, and firmness without directly affecting adipose tissue. It treats skin laxity on the body but does not result in a reduction of waist circumference or fat volume.
Can a radiofrequency session be performed if you have a pacemaker?+
No, having a pacemaker or defibrillator is an absolute contraindication. The electromagnetic waves emitted by the handpiece may interfere with the functioning of implanted electronic devices. Any metal or electronic implant located in the treatment area must be reported to the physician.
Is it possible to combine radiofrequency with other aesthetic medical treatments?+
Yes, radiofrequency can easily be incorporated into a treatment protocol combined with injections of botulinum toxin, hyaluronic acid, or tissue stimulators. Your doctor will schedule the interval between sessions based on the treatment areas and the substances administered.
What are the medical contraindications for radiofrequency treatment?+
The main contraindications include: the presence of a pacemaker or an electronic/metal implant in the area, pregnancy, oncological conditions currently under treatment, skin sensitivity disorders, and active infections or lesions at the treatment site.
What are the possible side effects after a session?+
Recovery is very straightforward, requiring no time away from social activities. Mild redness (erythema) or a sensation of tightness may persist for anywhere from a few hours to two days. Should pain persist or unusual swelling occur beyond 48 hours, the medical team should be informed.
Which areas of the body can be treated with radiofrequency?+
In addition to the face, jawline, and neck, radiofrequency treatment is effectively applied to the body—specifically the abdomen, arms, inner thighs, and knees. Since the skin is thicker and the surface areas are larger in these regions, a tailored number of sessions is generally required.
