The treatment

What is
Botulinum toxin?

Botulinum toxin is an injectable medicine that gently relaxes the small facial muscles behind expression lines: the ones that deepen when you frown, raise your forehead or squint.

The principle is simple. These muscles contract thousands of times a day and eventually crease the skin, like a sheet of paper folded in the same place. Botulinum toxin puts their activity on standby for a few months. The muscle moves less, the skin folds less, and the line softens on its own. The effect then fades gradually: nothing is permanent.

This is not a new product. Ophthalmologists have used it for over thirty years to treat squints and eyelid spasms. Its aesthetic use has been approved since the early 2000s. It is now one of the most widely performed and most thoroughly studied treatments in the world.

Three areas are requested most often: forehead lines, the frown line between the eyebrows and crow's feet at the corner of the eyes.

The aim is not to freeze your face. Our physicians deliberately dose so that you can still frown, smile and show what you feel. You should still look like yourself, simply less tired. The dose is refined from one session to the next, according to how you respond.

Everything starts with a consultation at the Petit-Lancy clinic: the physician watches your face at rest and in movement, checks that there is no contraindication, and tells you what is genuinely achievable. Botulinum toxin is a prescription medicine: only a physician may inject it.

Why choose this treatment

  • Fast: 30 minutes, and you carry on with your day as you leave
  • Natural: the dose is calculated so your face stays mobile and expressive
  • Temporary: if you don't like the result, it fades on its own
  • Preventive too: the less the skin folds, the later the line sets in for good
  • Proven: over thirty years of medical experience with this molecule
  • Fourteen-day review appointment included, with a top-up if needed

How it works

The treatment
process.

01
Before

Personalized consultation

Every procedure begins with a mandatory preliminary consultation with your FMH-certified specialist. This session allows for a precise anatomical analysis of your face, an assessment of your facial muscle dynamics, and a check for any contraindications (such as neuromuscular disorders or pregnancy). A personalized treatment plan is created to meet your expectations while preserving the natural harmony of your expressions. The practitioner informs you of potential after-effects and provides a detailed quote in CHF, as well as an informed consent form.

02
During

The injection session

The session lasts an average of 15 to 30 minutes. After thoroughly disinfecting the skin, the doctor precisely identifies the injection points in the targeted muscles (frown lines, forehead, crow's feet). Botulinum toxin is injected using very fine needles, ensuring precision and minimal discomfort for the patient. The practitioner's expertise allows for targeted muscle relaxation to achieve a natural result without freezing the face. You may leave the clinic immediately after the session.

03
After

Monitoring & results

You may resume your daily activities immediately. Slight redness or minor, temporary bruising may appear at the injection sites. For four hours following the session, it is recommended that you do not lie down and avoid keeping your head bent for extended periods. For 24 to 48 hours, avoid strenuous exercise, facial massages, saunas, steam rooms, and direct sun exposure to prevent the product from spreading unintentionally. The initial effects appear within 3 to 7 days, with optimal results observed at 14 days.

Frequently asked questions

What you'd like
to know before your session.

What is the difference between Botox® and botulinum toxin?+
Botox® is the best-known brand name for a medication containing the active substance botulinum toxin type A. In aesthetic medicine, botulinum toxin is a purified protein used to temporarily relax the muscles responsible for expression lines. Other pharmaceutical products authorized in Switzerland contain this same molecule under different brand names (such as Vistabel®, Dysport®, or Xeomin®).
Can this treatment freeze facial expressions?+
No, when administered by a specialist physician expert in facial anatomy, the treatment preserves the natural mobility of your features. The "frozen look" occurs only in cases of overdose or incorrect injection placement. The goal is to use a personalized dosage to soften dynamic wrinkles (forehead, frown lines, crow's feet) while maintaining the harmony and natural movement of your expressions.
Are the injections painful?+
The discomfort experienced during the session is very brief and minimal. Administered using extremely fine medical needles (30G or 32G), the procedure generally requires no local anesthesia. Most patients describe a slight, fleeting stinging sensation at the few points of muscular contact.
When do the first results on wrinkles appear?+
The initial muscle-relaxing effects appear gradually between 3 and 7 days after the session. The optimal aesthetic result is visible at 14 days. A follow-up consultation is routinely offered at the two-week mark to assess facial symmetry and make any necessary adjustments.
How long does the product's effect last?+
The benefits of the treatment last between 3 and 6 months on average. This duration varies depending on the treated area, muscle strength, individual metabolism, and lifestyle (very intense physical activity can accelerate absorption). Regular sessions often allow the interval between appointments to be gradually extended.
What are the medical contraindications for this treatment?+
This treatment is contraindicated in pregnant or breastfeeding women, as well as in individuals with a neuromuscular disorder (myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome), an active infection at the injection site, or a known hypersensitivity to the active substance or its excipients. A preliminary assessment allows for the detection of potential drug interactions.
