The treatment

What is
Hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a substance your body makes naturally. It is found in the skin, the joints and the eyes, where it holds water and gives tissues their bounce. With age, your body produces less and less: the skin thins, volumes hollow out and contours slacken.

For injection, a laboratory-made hyaluronic acid gel is used. Depending on its consistency, it fills a line, restores volume to a cheekbone or gives structure to a jawline. A soft gel is used for lips and under-eye hollows. A firmer gel supports the deeper areas.

Contrary to a widespread idea, the aim is not to fill everywhere. An ageing face mainly loses support at the temples, cheekbones and jaw. By treating these supports, lines in the lower face often improve without being injected directly. This is why our physicians think in terms of balance rather than of one isolated area.

The most frequent requests at the Petit-Lancy clinic: hollows under the eyes, cheekbones, folds between the nose and mouth, downturned mouth corners, lips, chin and jawline.

One reassuring point sets hyaluronic acid apart from other products: it is reversible. If the result does not suit you, or in the event of a complication, a physician can dissolve it with a specific enzyme.

The result is immediate, then refines over two weeks once the swelling has gone. It generally lasts six to eighteen months depending on the area treated, the product used and your metabolism.

Why choose this treatment

  • Reversible: a physician can dissolve the product if necessary
  • The gel contains an anaesthetic, which makes the session well tolerated
  • Lasts six to eighteen months depending on the area and the product
  • You resume your activities the same day, with possible swelling for 48 hours

How it works

The treatment
process.

01
Before

Prior consultation

Prior to any injection, a specialist physician conducts an individual diagnostic consultation. The practitioner performs a rigorous anatomical analysis of your face and discusses your expectations in order to establish a personalized and transparent treatment plan. Medical photographs may be taken for therapeutic monitoring purposes, in compliance with privacy regulations (nLPD). The physician then precisely marks the area using an anatomical pencil and confirms the absence of contraindications before commencing the procedure.

02
During

Precision injection

The session generally lasts between 30 and 45 minutes. After the area has been sterilized, the doctor injects cross-linked hyaluronic acid using a fine needle or a flexible micro-cannula. The inclusion of a local anesthetic (lidocaine) in the gel ensures minimal discomfort. Drawing on a thorough understanding of muscle and vascular structures, the practitioner adjusts the injection volume to restore facial balance or fill in wrinkles, all while preserving the natural expression of your features.

03
After

Immediate follow-up and post-procedure recommendations

At the end of the session, the treated areas are gently massaged to ensure even product distribution. The patient can resume normal activities immediately. Mild, temporary swelling or minor bruising may occur at the injection sites. It is recommended to avoid strenuous exercise, vigorous massage, sun exposure, and sources of extreme heat (such as saunas or steam rooms) for 48 hours. A follow-up appointment is scheduled after two weeks to assess the final, stable result.

Frequently asked questions

What you'd like
to know before your session.

Will the results of hyaluronic acid injections look natural?+
Yes, when appropriately dosed, a hyaluronic acid treatment preserves natural facial harmony and movement. Overfilled outcomes typically result from excessive volume or poor injection placement. FMH specialists follow a conservative approach, placing micro-quantities of cross-linked dermal filler into targeted areas (cheeks, nasolabial folds, lips) to restore volume while maintaining your natural features. A follow-up session at 14 days allows for minor adjustments if required.
What is the difference between hyaluronic acid and botulinum toxin?+
Hyaluronic acid is a biodegradable dermal filler that restores lost volume, smooths static wrinkles, and provides deep skin hydration. Conversely, botulinum toxin (commonly known under the brand name Botox®) is a muscle relaxant that temporarily eases the facial muscles responsible for dynamic expression lines (forehead, frown lines, crow's feet). These two aesthetic procedures serve complementary roles and are frequently combined in global facial rejuvenation plans.
Are dermal filler injections painful?+
Discomfort during the procedure is minimal. Modern dermal fillers contain a local anesthetic (lidocaine) to numb the targeted area during the injection. Furthermore, using blunt-tipped micro-cannulas or ultra-fine needles significantly reduces stinging sensations, swelling, and the risk of bruising.
How long do the effects of a volumizing treatment last?+
The results typically last between 6 and 18 months, depending on the treated area, the cross-linking density of the gel, individual metabolism, and lifestyle factors. Because hyaluronic acid is naturally absorbed by the body over time, periodic maintenance sessions help sustain the aesthetic benefits.
What are the medical contraindications for hyaluronic acid injections?+
Hyaluronic acid injections are contraindicated during pregnancy or breastfeeding, as well as for individuals with active autoimmune conditions, known hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine, or active skin infections (herpes, severe acne) at the targeted site. A preliminary medical consultation is essential to confirm treatment safety and suitability.
