Dr David Schapiro is an ophthalmic surgeon working exclusively in surgery of the orbit, eyelids and lacrimal ducts - a field very few practitioners cover full-time. He obtained his MD and his specialist title in ophthalmology in France in 2000; both were recognised in Switzerland in September 2012, and in 2013 he obtained the Swiss certificate of additional training in ophthalmic surgery. A former resident of the Paris hospitals (Bicêtre hospital, AP-HP) and former staff practitioner at the Rothschild Foundation, he holds a diploma in surgery of the eyelids, orbit and lacrimal ducts and is a member of the French Society of Ophthalmology.

His practice spans two areas. On one side, major reconstructive surgery: eyelid and orbital tumours, congenital malformations, sequelae of trauma, and rehabilitation of the socket after exenteration. On the other, aesthetic eye surgery and medicine: upper and lower blepharoplasty, correction of eyelid malpositions, botulinum toxin and dermal filler injections. He also treats chronic watery eyes and dry eye disease.

Because he is first and foremost an ophthalmologist, preserving visual function guides every surgical decision: the eyelid is treated as the organ that protects the eye before it is considered an aesthetic area.

He has been teaching and publishing since 1998: presentations at the congresses of the French Society of Ophthalmology and of ESOPRS, teaching on the inter-university diploma in orbital, eyelid and lacrimal surgery, live-broadcast surgery at the Rothschild Foundation, publications in the Journal Français d'Ophtalmologie and the translation of an atlas of lacrimal duct surgery. He consults in Geneva in French, English, Spanish and Italian.
