The treatment

What is
Polynucleotides?

Polynucleotides are short fragments of purified DNA, extracted from salmon or trout milt and highly filtered. This origin often surprises patients, so let us say it plainly: the product is purified to the point where no functional genetic material remains, and it has been used in medicine for decades, notably for wound healing.

Two families exist, and the Petit-Lancy clinic holds both. They come from the same raw material and differ in the length of their chains. Reviews published in 2025 place the boundary at around 1500 kilodaltons: below it the material is called PDRN, above it PN.

PDRN, the shorter form, works mainly through signalling. It activates the adenosine A2A receptor, which reduces inflammation and restarts collagen production by the fibroblasts. It is preferred on damaged skin, acne scarring and pigment marks.

PN, the longer form, works mainly through its structure. It binds water and acts as a scaffold for the supporting matrix of the dermis. It is preferred for skin quality in the broad sense, for hydration and for prevention.

In both cases the product does not fill and does not merely hydrate. The skin gradually regains thickness, suppleness and a better blood supply. This is why these treatments are particularly valued around the eyes, an area where the skin is very thin, where fillers puff up easily and where few treatments genuinely suit. They also give good results on thin, sensitive or reactive skin, on the neck, and alongside skin damaged by sun or acne.

The usual protocol comprises two to three sessions two to four weeks apart. The result builds over six to eight weeks, then holds for six to nine months depending on the area and your skin.

One honest reservation: this is a recent treatment in aesthetic medicine. Clinical results are encouraging, but with less long-term experience behind them than hyaluronic acid or botulinum toxin, and most of the published research concerns PDRN.

The choice between PDRN and PN, or a combination of the two, is made at consultation according to the state of your skin. The physician will explain where the treatment fits in your overall plan.

Why choose this treatment

  • Both PDRN and PN available: the physician picks the chain length that suits your skin
  • One of the few treatments suited to the eye area with no risk of puffiness
  • Calming effect: suitable for sensitive, reactive or irritated skin
  • Gradually thickens skin that has become too thin
  • Adds no volume: your features are not changed
  • Also useful on the neck, décolleté and acne-scarred skin
  • Short session, with no recovery time
  • Combines with botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid

How it works

The treatment
process.

01
Before

Prior consultation

You must report any allergy to fish or shellfish: the product is of marine origin. Also report any pregnancy, breastfeeding or autoimmune condition. Avoid alcohol and anti-inflammatories for 48 hours. Come without make-up, with the eye area free of cosmetics. We postpone in case of skin infection or an active cold sore on the area.

02
During

Application of the treatment

After disinfection, the physician places the product through small superficial injections spread across the area. Under the eyes, the points are few and placed with care, as the skin there is very thin. You feel brief pinpricks. Small bumps appear at each point: they are expected and settle within a few hours.

03
After

Post-Procedure Care & Follow-Up

Redness, small bumps and sometimes slight bruising last from a few hours to two days. Do not massage the area. Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms and sun for 48 hours. Make-up is fine from the next day. The next session is scheduled two to four weeks later: it is the repetition that builds the result.

Frequently asked questions

What you'd like
to know before your session.

Does the product really come from salmon?+
Yes, and that deserves an explanation. The DNA fragments are extracted and purified until no functional genetic material remains: what is left are the molecules that stimulate repair. This type of product has long been used in medicine, notably for wound healing.
Can I have it if I am allergic to fish?+
No. This is an absolute contraindication that must be reported at the consultation. An allergy to shellfish should also be mentioned, and the physician will suggest a different approach.
What is the difference between PDRN and PN?+
Both come from the same purified DNA and differ in the length of their chains. PDRN, the shorter form, works through cell signalling and suits damaged skin, scarring and pigment marks better. PN, the longer form, binds water and supports the structure of the dermis, which makes it a better choice for skin quality and prevention. The clinic holds both and the physician chooses according to your skin.
Will it erase my dark circles?+
That depends on their cause. If they come from thin skin and poor microcirculation, the result is often clear. If they come from a bony hollow or a fat pad, another treatment will be needed. The physician makes that distinction at the consultation.
How does it differ from hyaluronic acid?+
Hyaluronic acid hydrates and fills. Polynucleotides repair: they calm inflammation and prompt the skin to rebuild itself. On thin, irritated skin around the eyes, they are often more suitable than a filler.
How many sessions are needed?+
Two to three sessions two to four weeks apart. A single session achieves little: it is the accumulation that establishes the result. Maintenance is then offered once or twice a year.
Does it hurt?+
The injections are brief and superficial. The eye area is the most sensitive. An anaesthetic cream applied beforehand makes the session comfortable.
What is known about how well it works?+
Published results and clinical experience are encouraging, particularly on skin quality and the eye area. We would rather tell you, however, that this is a more recent treatment, with less long-term experience than hyaluronic acid or botulinum toxin.
What are the contraindications?+
Allergy to fish or shellfish, pregnancy and breastfeeding, skin infection or an active cold sore, an unstable autoimmune condition.
Are there side effects?+
Redness, small bumps and sometimes a bruise, especially under the eyes where the skin is thin. All of this clears within a few hours to two days. Contact us if swelling persists beyond forty-eight hours.
Where is it done, and by whom?+
At the ono estetika clinic in Petit-Lancy, Route de Chancy 59B, 1213 Petit-Lancy, Geneva, reachable by tram 14, stop « Les Esserts ». The procedure is performed only by a physician, in a treatment room and under strict hygiene conditions.
