The treatment

What is
Hyaluronidase?

Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that dissolves hyaluronic acid. It is the antidote to every hyaluronic acid filler, and it is what makes these products particularly safe: an injection that does not suit you is never permanent.

The reasons for using it vary. Most often it is a result the patient dislikes: too much volume, asymmetry, over-defined lips. Sometimes the product has migrated over the years away from where it was placed, which is common around the lips and under the eyes. It can also form a small palpable lump or give a bluish tint under thin skin. This is a recognised phenomenon caused by the way light passes through the gel.

It also has a far more important emergency use: if product has been injected by mistake into a blood vessel and is compromising the blood supply to the skin, immediate injection of hyaluronidase can save the tissue. This is why every practice performing injections must keep it on site.

At the Petit-Lancy clinic, the consultation first establishes whether what bothers you really does come from a filler. That is not always the case: puffiness under the eyes can also be a fat pad or fluid retention. The physician will tell you honestly rather than dissolve unnecessarily.

Two limits to know about. The enzyme does not discriminate: it also dissolves some of your own natural hyaluronic acid, which your skin rebuilds within a few weeks. And it has no effect on products that are not hyaluronic acid based.

The physician will also explain what to expect afterwards, since the area almost always swells noticeably for a day or two before settling.

Why choose this treatment

  • Lets you go back: no hyaluronic acid injection is permanent
  • Fast result: most of the effect is visible within 24 to 48 hours
  • Corrects excess volume, asymmetry, a lump or product that has migrated
  • Short session, with no recovery time
  • Safety: it is the antidote used in an emergency if a vessel is affected

How it works

The treatment
process.

01
Before

Prior consultation

Report any allergy, particularly to bee or wasp stings, as well as pregnancy or breastfeeding. Bring whatever information you have about the product injected and the date it was done. Avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatories for 48 hours. The physician may suggest a prior skin test depending on your history. Plan the session well away from an important event, as the area often swells noticeably for one to two days.

02
During

Application of the treatment

The physician palpates the area to locate the product precisely, sometimes with the help of ultrasound. After disinfection, the enzyme is injected directly into the deposit to be treated, at several small points. Massage follows to distribute it properly. The session is short. You often see a visible reduction before you even leave the clinic.

03
After

Post-Procedure Care & Follow-Up

The area almost always swells for 24 to 48 hours, sometimes strikingly: this is expected and temporary. Bruising is possible. Apply cold if needed and avoid strenuous exercise, saunas and sun for 48 hours. Wait at least two weeks before any new hyaluronic acid injection in the area. Sleep with your head slightly raised on the first night.

Frequently asked questions

What you'd like
to know before your session.

Will it all go in a single session?+
Often, but not always. An old, very dense or deeply placed product may require a second session two or three weeks later. The physician prefers to work in stages rather than dissolve too much at once.
Does it also dissolve my own natural hyaluronic acid?+
Yes, partly, and you should know that. The enzyme does not distinguish between the injected gel and the one your skin makes. Your body does rebuild it spontaneously within a few weeks, however: this effect is temporary.
Does it hurt?+
The session is comparable to a conventional injection and an anaesthetic cream is applied beforehand. What surprises patients is mainly the swelling over the following 48 hours, rather than the procedure itself.
Does it work on all fillers?+
No, only on hyaluronic acid. Biostimulators such as calcium hydroxyapatite or poly-L-lactic acid are not affected: no enzyme dissolves them. That is one reason always to know which product you have been given.
Is there a risk of allergy?+
It is rare but real, as the enzyme is of animal origin. This is why the physician asks about your allergies, particularly to insect stings, and may perform a skin test before treating.
What if the product was injected somewhere else?+
That is not a problem and there is nothing awkward about it. Simply bring whatever information you have about the product and the date. Without those details, the physician proceeds more cautiously, with gradual doses.
