The treatment

What is
Upper Lip Lift (Lip Lift)?

An upper lip lift, also called a Lip Lift, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that shortens the distance between the base of the nose and the upper lip. It does not involve injecting a product into the lip. Instead, the surgeon removes a small strip of skin, most often just below the nose, and repositions the upper lip.

This procedure may be considered when the distance between the nose and the lip appears long, naturally or with ageing, or when the pink part of the upper lip is not very visible. A Lip Lift can make the upper lip more visible and change the balance between the nose, lips and smile. Depending on your anatomy, it may also increase the amount of upper teeth visible at rest or when smiling.

Several Lip Lift techniques exist. A common technique is the subnasal or "bullhorn" Lip Lift, in which the incision is placed in the natural crease below the nose. The technique is selected according to facial anatomy, skin quality and the goals discussed with the surgeon.

A Lip Lift is a surgical procedure with a long-lasting effect. It leaves a scar, usually located below the nose, whose appearance changes as healing progresses. As with any surgery, possible risks include bleeding, infection, a reaction to anaesthesia, asymmetry, changes in sensation, persistent swelling or a visible scar.

A medical consultation is essential to confirm whether the procedure is suitable for you, discuss alternatives and explain the expected benefits, limitations, risks and healing process. Results vary from one patient to another and cannot be guaranteed.

How it works

The treatment
process.

01
Before

Before surgery

Before surgery, a consultation allows the surgeon to examine your face, understand your expectations and check whether a Lip Lift is appropriate for you. Tell the surgeon about medical conditions, allergies, medicines, supplements, smoking and previous procedures. Some medicines may need to be adjusted, but only on medical advice. Stopping smoking for several weeks before and after surgery may be recommended to support healing.

02
During

During surgery

A Lip Lift is most often performed under local anaesthesia. After precise markings are made, the surgeon creates an incision, usually below the base of the nose. A small amount of skin is removed, the upper lip is repositioned and the incision is closed with fine sutures. The technique and amount of skin removed are adapted to your anatomy. The procedure usually takes less than one hour, although the duration can vary.

03
After

After surgery

After surgery, swelling, bruising, tenderness or a feeling of tightness are common. You will receive specific instructions for caring for the incision and scar. You may be advised to sleep with your head elevated, choose soft foods and avoid smoking, alcohol and strenuous activity while healing. Sutures are removed or dissolve depending on the technique used. Medical follow-up is important to monitor your recovery.

Frequently asked questions

What you'd like
to know before your session.

Does a Lip Lift add volume to the lips?+
It does not work like a dermal filler. It shortens the distance between the nose and the upper lip and can make the pink part of the lip more visible. The impression of added volume is therefore mainly visual.
Is the result permanent?+
The surgical repositioning is long-lasting. However, the face continues to change naturally with age. The final result also depends on each patient's anatomy and healing.
Where is the scar?+
With the subnasal technique, the incision is usually placed in the natural crease at the base of the nose. A scar is unavoidable after a surgical incision. It may become less noticeable over time, but its final appearance varies from person to person.
What type of anaesthesia is used?+
An isolated Lip Lift is often performed under local anaesthesia. Another type of anaesthesia may be proposed if the procedure is combined with another surgery or depending on your medical situation.
How long is the recovery?+
Swelling and bruising often begin to decrease during the first week. Returning to work may be possible after a few days depending on your activity and recovery. Strenuous exercise is generally avoided for around two weeks. Healing then continues for several weeks or months.
What are the main risks?+
As with any surgery, a Lip Lift can involve bleeding, infection, a reaction to anaesthesia, asymmetry, changes in sensation, persistent swelling or a visible scar. A consultation allows your individual risks and possible alternatives to be discussed before any decision.
