The treatment

What is
medical microneedling?

Microneedling uses a device fitted with fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. At the clinic, we distinguish superficial microneedling, performed at a low depth of up to 0.5 mm depending on the area and protocol, from medical microneedling, where depth may exceed 0.5 mm when clinically indicated.

Superficial microneedling primarily aims to improve the overall appearance of the skin, including texture and radiance. In a cosmetic setting, treatment should remain limited to the epidermis.

Medical microneedling acts beyond the epidermis and triggers a controlled skin-repair and tissue-remodelling response. It has been studied in particular for improving the appearance of atrophic acne scars and for certain signs of skin ageing. Results vary according to the indication, depth used, treatment area, skin characteristics and number of sessions.

Depth is always adapted to the area and indication. Temporary redness, sensitivity, mild swelling, dryness or flaking may occur after treatment. A prior assessment is used to select the appropriate protocol and check precautions and contraindications.

Why choose this treatment

  • Superficial microneedling: low depth, up to 0.5 mm depending on the area and protocol
  • Medical microneedling: depth may exceed 0.5 mm when clinically indicated
  • May progressively improve skin texture and quality
  • Medical microneedling has been studied in particular for atrophic acne scars

How it works

The treatment
process.

01
Before

Initial Consultation & Penetration Depth Assessment

An initial medical assessment determines whether superficial or medical microneedling is indicated and establishes the appropriate penetration depth. During this check, you must report any ongoing treatments, medical history, pregnancy, active infections or lesions, a tendency toward hypertrophic scarring, or other skin conditions in the target area. Dermo-cosmetic products to discontinue prior to the procedure will be specified individually.

02
During

Treatment Procedure & Controlled Micro-perforations

Following thorough skin cleansing and decontamination, a topical anesthetic cream may be applied for the medical protocol. The medical device performs controlled passes with a depth tailored to the area: up to 0.5 mm for superficial care, and exceeding 0.5 mm for medical indications. Active ingredient complexes applied simultaneously are specifically formulated for sterile intradermal use.

03
After

Post-Procedure Care, Healing & Protection Guidelines

Following the session, transient erythema (redness), sensitivity, warmth, mild edema, dryness, or flaking may occur. Post-treatment care and broad-spectrum photoprotection are adjusted to the performed protocol. Avoid touching or irritating the skin barrier, and strictly follow the recommendations provided by the clinic.

Frequently asked questions

What you'd like
to know before your session.

What is the difference between superficial and medical microneedling?+
In our protocol, superficial microneedling is performed at a low depth, up to 0.5 mm depending on the area. Medical microneedling may exceed 0.5 mm when clinically indicated. Under Swiss regulatory guidance, the important criterion is penetration beyond the epidermis, which Swissmedic describes as a medical procedure.
What are the aims of superficial microneedling?+
It primarily aims to progressively improve the skin's overall appearance, texture and radiance. Results vary according to the skin and protocol.
What are the aims of medical microneedling?+
It is used in particular to improve the appearance of atrophic acne scars and has been studied for certain signs of skin ageing. Results depend on the indication, depth and individual response.
Is it painful?+
Sensation depends on depth and area. A topical anaesthetic cream may be used for medical microneedling. A completely pain-free treatment cannot be guaranteed.
How many sessions are required?+
There is no single number suitable for everyone. The protocol is defined according to the indication, area, depth and response to treatment.
What side effects may occur?+
Temporary redness, sensitivity, warmth, mild swelling, dryness or flaking may occur. Less common adverse effects have also been reported in the literature. Any unusual or persistent reaction should be reported.
Is microneedling suitable for everyone?+
No. A prior assessment is required to identify contraindications, examine the skin and determine whether a superficial or medical protocol is appropriate.
