The treatment

What is
Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis means sweating far beyond what your body needs to cool itself. It is not a question of hygiene or willpower: the sweat glands are simply receiving too many instructions to work.

The most common form often starts in adolescence, affects specific areas such as the underarms, the palms and the soles, and worsens as soon as you feel stressed, which creates a vicious circle. The consequences are above all social: marked shirts, avoided handshakes, changing clothes several times a day, meetings you dread.

Injecting botulinum toxin into the skin blocks the nerve message telling the glands to produce sweat. Sweating falls sharply where you are treated, and only there. As the area involved is tiny compared with the whole body, your temperature regulation is not disturbed: you carry on sweating normally everywhere else.

At the Petit-Lancy clinic, the consultation begins by ruling out another cause: a thyroid problem, diabetes, infection, menopause, a drug side effect. If you sweat all over, at night, or if it started recently in adulthood, medical investigation is needed before any local treatment. We will refer you.

Underarm treatment is the best documented and the best tolerated. A simple test stains the most active zones so the points can be placed exactly where they are needed. The effect is felt within four to seven days and lasts six to nine months, considerably longer than on the face. One to two sessions a year are usually enough.

We will also tell you plainly what the treatment does not do: it reduces sweating markedly but rarely stops it completely, and it does not change body odour at its source.

Why choose this treatment

  • Clear, targeted reduction in underarm sweating
  • Effect felt in 4 to 7 days and long-lasting: 6 to 9 months on average
  • No excessive sweating shifting elsewhere on the body
  • Session of around 30 minutes, you leave immediately
  • Day-to-day comfort restored: clothing, meetings, social life
  • An alternative to strong antiperspirants, which often irritate the skin

How it works

The treatment
process.

01
Before

Prior consultation

A prior medical consultation rules out another cause for your sweating. Do not remove hair in the 48 hours beforehand and apply neither deodorant nor antiperspirant on the day. Report any pregnancy, breastfeeding or muscle and nerve condition. If a mapping test is planned, come with clean, dry skin and no cream applied.

02
During

Application of the treatment

The area is cleansed, then sometimes stained using a simple test that darkens the places where you sweat most. Once the anaesthetic cream has taken effect, the physician performs small, very superficial injections spaced one to two centimetres apart, around fifteen to twenty points per underarm. Each injection forms a small bleb that settles within minutes.

03
After

Post-Procedure Care & Follow-Up

Redness and tenderness are possible for a few hours. No deodorant or antiperspirant for 24 hours, and no exercise, sauna, steam room or hot bath for 48 hours. Do not remove hair for three days. Sweating decreases progressively over the first week. We offer you a review at one month.

Frequently asked questions

What you'd like
to know before your session.

Is it dangerous to stop sweating?+
No. The area treated is tiny compared with your whole body. Your body carries on sweating normally everywhere else and your temperature regulates without any problem.
Will I sweat more elsewhere?+
A slight increase is occasionally reported, but it stays moderate and well tolerated in the great majority of cases. It bears no relation to what is seen after surgery on the nerves, which is an entirely different approach.
Does it hurt?+
It is more sensitive than a facial treatment, because the injections are numerous and very superficial. The anaesthetic cream applied beforehand, sometimes with skin cooling, makes the session perfectly bearable.
How long does it last?+
Six to nine months on average. One to two sessions a year are usually enough. Many patients schedule the first in spring, before the warm weather.
Can hands and feet be treated?+
Yes, but these areas are more sensitive and the procedure more demanding. Stronger anaesthesia is often needed, and temporary weakness of the hand can follow treatment of the palms. The physician discusses this with you and provides a quotation after assessment.
Is it covered by insurance?+
Severe excessive sweating is a recognised condition and cover is sometimes possible in documented situations. It all depends on your policy: contact your insurer directly, as we cannot guarantee anything.
Can I keep using my deodorant?+
Yes, from 24 hours after the session. Many patients find that a simple deodorant is now enough, where a strong antiperspirant was needed before.
What side effects are possible?+
Redness, tenderness and small bruises at the injection points for a few days. Slight local muscle weakness is possible and remains temporary. Your hair is unchanged, and body odour often improves since the skin stays dry.
Who cannot have it?+
Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, people with a muscle or nerve condition, anyone allergic to a component and anyone with an infection on the area.
