The treatment

What is
Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a cosmetic or reconstructive surgical procedure designed to modify the shape, position or proportions of the ears. It may be considered for prominent ears, asymmetry or when some contours of the outer ear are insufficiently developed. The aim is to bring the ears closer to the head and create a balanced appearance while preserving a natural shape suited to the patient's anatomy.

During consultation, the surgeon examines ear shape, projection, cartilage quality, symmetry and the patient's expectations. The possible corrections, scar location and limitations of surgery are explained. The technique is selected according to anatomy and may include cartilage reshaping, folding, fixation or limited removal.

In adults, otoplasty may be performed under local anesthesia with or without sedation, or under general anesthesia depending on the technique and clinical circumstances. In children, anesthesia is determined by the medical team. Incisions are usually placed behind the ear, although their location depends on the correction required.

As with any surgery, otoplasty carries possible risks, including bleeding, hematoma, infection, healing problems, changes in sensation, residual asymmetry, cartilage irregularity or partial recurrence of prominence. Additional surgery may occasionally be required.

After surgery, swelling, bruising and temporary sensitivity may occur. A protective dressing or headband may be recommended. The result evolves as swelling decreases and tissues heal. The indication, expected benefits, risks and postoperative instructions are always discussed individually during surgical consultation.

Why choose this treatment

  • Personalized correction of ear projection or shape
  • Cartilage reshaping according to anatomy and the intended correction
  • Scars generally positioned in the fold behind the ear

How it works

The treatment
process.

01
Before

Before surgery

Before surgery, the surgeon examines the ears, clarifies the goals and explains the planned technique. Medical history, medication, allergies and factors that may affect healing are assessed. Instructions are provided regarding medication, smoking, fasting when required and arrangements for returning home. Hair and the surgical area should be prepared according to the medical team's recommendations.

02
During

During surgery

The procedure is performed in an operating room. Depending on the correction required, the surgeon generally makes an incision behind the ear to access the cartilage. The cartilage may be reshaped, folded, secured with sutures or reduced in a limited way to modify the shape and projection of the ear. After symmetry and bleeding control are checked, the incisions are closed. A protective dressing or headband may then be applied.

03
After

After surgery

After surgery, swelling, bruising, tightness or sensitivity may occur. The dressing or headband should be worn according to the surgeon's instructions. Prescribed scar care and medication should be followed. Impacts, rubbing and activities that could injure the ears should be avoided during healing. Follow-up visits are used to monitor ear position and scar development.

Frequently asked questions

What you'd like
to know before your session.

What is otoplasty?+
Otoplasty is surgery that modifies the shape, position or proportions of the ears. It is commonly used to correct prominent ears, certain asymmetries or cartilage contours that are not sufficiently defined.
How is the procedure performed?+
The technique depends on anatomy. An incision is generally made behind the ear. Cartilage may then be reshaped, folded, secured with sutures or reduced in a limited way to achieve the correction planned with the surgeon.
What type of anesthesia is used?+
In adults, local anesthesia with or without sedation, or general anesthesia, may be proposed. In children, the anesthesia strategy is determined by the medical team. The choice depends on age, technique and clinical circumstances.
Are the scars visible?+
Scars are usually located in the fold behind the ear, which helps make them discreet. Their appearance changes over several months and depends on individual healing.
What are the risks of otoplasty?+
Possible complications include bleeding, hematoma, infection, healing problems, changes in sensation, asymmetry, cartilage irregularities or partial recurrence. Additional correction may occasionally be required.
How long is a headband worn?+
Duration depends on the technique, healing and the surgeon's practice. A dressing is often used initially, and a headband may then be recommended for a specified period. Personalized postoperative instructions should be followed.
When can sports be resumed?+
Return is gradual. Activities without a risk of contact can generally be resumed before sports that expose the ears to impacts or rubbing. The surgeon provides an appropriate timetable during postoperative follow-up.
How much does otoplasty cost?+
Otoplasty is provided upon quote. The price is established after consultation because it depends on the correction required, the type of anesthesia and the care arrangements.
