Skin Biopsy
The treatment
What is
Skin Biopsy?
A skin biopsy is a minor diagnostic procedure in which a tissue sample is taken from a suspicious or unclear skin lesion. The subsequent histological examination in a laboratory helps reliably distinguish between inflammatory skin conditions, infections, unusual moles and benign or malignant changes.
Depending on the findings, either a small part of the skin lesion or the entire lesion is removed. Various methods are available, including a punch biopsy, superficial shave removal or complete surgical excision. The outpatient procedure is normally performed under local anaesthesia.
How it works
The treatment
process.
Before the treatment
The skin lesion is carefully examined and the most suitable biopsy method is selected. Please inform us about any existing medical conditions, allergies, bleeding disorders and all medications you are taking. Blood thinning medication should only be adjusted after consultation with your physician. You do not normally need to fast before a skin biopsy performed under local anaesthesia.
During the treatment
The affected area of skin is disinfected and locally anaesthetised. A small tissue sample or the entire skin lesion is then removed. Depending on the method, the wound may be closed with one or more sutures. Finally, a protective dressing is applied and the sample is sent for histological examination.
After the treatment
You will receive detailed instructions on how to clean and care for the biopsy site. The wound should be kept clean and protected from friction, tension and strenuous activity. If sutures were used, they will be removed after several days, depending on the area of the body. Please contact us if you experience increasing redness, swelling, pain, bleeding or fever.
