Nail Fungus
The treatment
What is
Nail Fungus?
Nail fungus, medically known as onychomycosis, is a common fungal infection of the fingernails or toenails. Affected nails may become yellowish or whitish, thickened and brittle, and may partially separate from the nail bed. As other conditions can cause similar changes to the nails, a careful diagnosis is particularly important.
Depending on the severity, treatment options may include medicated nail varnishes, antifungal tablets or additional procedures such as laser treatment. The aim is to eliminate the fungal infection and allow the healthy nail to grow back. Treatment requires patience and consistent application.
How it works
The treatment
process.
Before the treatment
The affected nails are carefully examined. As discolouration or thickening is not always caused by a fungal infection, a nail sample may be taken and analysed in a laboratory. Please inform us about any existing medical conditions, allergies and medications you take regularly. Remove any nail varnish before your appointment and only pause ongoing treatments after consulting your physician.
During the treatment
Treatment depends on the identified pathogen, the extent of the infection and the number of affected nails. Options include medicated nail varnishes, antifungal tablets or a combination of different methods. Laser treatment may also be considered as an additional option. Before treatment with tablets, possible interactions and any blood tests required for the chosen medication will be discussed.
After the treatment
Use the prescribed medication consistently for the recommended period. Keep your feet and the areas between your toes dry, change your socks regularly and treat any athlete’s foot at the same time. Shoes and nail care instruments should be cleaned hygienically and not shared with others. Follow up appointments help assess the success of the treatment and detect recurrences at an early stage.
