Corn
The treatment
What is
Corn?
A corn, medically known as a clavus, is a localised area of thickened skin with a firm central core. It develops due to repeated pressure or friction, usually on the toes or soles of the feet. Tight footwear, toe deformities or uneven weight distribution can contribute to its development. The inward pointing core can cause considerable pain when walking.
During treatment, the thickened skin is carefully removed and pressure on the affected area is reduced. Protective padding, insoles, suitable footwear or medical products that soften the hardened skin may be used. Without consistent pressure relief, the corn may return.
How it works
The treatment
process.
Before the treatment
The affected area of skin is carefully examined to distinguish the corn from a wart or other skin condition. Possible causes, such as unsuitable footwear, deformities or uneven pressure, are also assessed. Please inform us if you have diabetes, circulatory problems, nerve damage or impaired wound healing, as special care is required in these cases.
During the treatment
The thickened skin and central core of the corn are carefully removed using suitable instruments. As the treatment mainly removes dead skin, anaesthesia is not normally required. Pressure relieving pads, insoles or medical products may also be recommended. If significant deformities are present, an additional orthopaedic or podiatric assessment may be advisable.
After the treatment
After removal, the treated area should be kept clean and protected from further pressure. Wear properly fitting shoes with sufficient room and use any recommended pads or insoles. Do not attempt to remove any remaining hard skin yourself using sharp objects. If pain, redness or bleeding increases, or if signs of infection develop, the area should be medically examined again.
